The name of Hamasaki Ayumi might be quite unfamiliar for Western people. She is a diva in Japanese Pop (J-Pop) music that has a very big influence not only in music, but also in fashion and lifestyle of girl teenagers. She has so great achievements that lead her to be the first female singer who has eight studio albums in the top of the Oricon chart since her debut and the first artist to have an album debut at number-one for 11 following years. Nevertheless, the main point in this article is not her achievements but the power in her lyrics that touches the heart of the listeners.

Hamasaki started her career as a singer in 1999 when Max Matsuura, her future producer, listened to her voice in karaoke. Initially, this Fukuoka girl distrusted him and turned the offer down. In the next year, Matsuura succeed in recruiting her to be a singer under Avex label.

Matsuura then sent her to New York to improve her vocal quality and skill and during her study in New York, Hamasaki often corresponded with him. Through this correspondence, he found out the impressing style in her writing. When she returned to Japan, the producer suggested that she try writing her own lyrics.

In writing her lyrics, Hamasaki always try to view on the experience of herself or her friend objectively, and put her feeling into words. Writing when she is sad leads her to write a lyric of dark song, and vice versa. She just wants to be honest to her own feeling through her lyrics. However, this honesty makes a lot of people love to hear her songs since it touches the heart of the listeners easily.

Somehow, she is a good writer so that I do really want to learn a lot of things from her. She could write the complexity of her feeling in simple and easy words. Her first single A Song for XX reflects hurt, pain, and agony through the words, "...I had no place to live. I could not find one. I do not know if I could have any hope for the future..." However, it also shows her spirit to keep continuing her life through the word, "...The sun is rising. I must go soon. I can not stay in the same place forever..."

Just try searching the web for the translation of her songs. Her lyrics are sad, sentimental, and very poetic and thoughtful. Somehow, she also manages to blend it with unique pop/techno music that just fits. You will not find such an honest singer like her in Japanese Pop music.
