Classical Guitarist Andrés Segovia

Andrés Segovia (1893-1987) is considered to be the father of the modern classical gutiar movement by most modern scholars. Many feel, that without his efforts, the classical guitar would still be considered a lowly bar instrument, played only by peasants.

Segovia's quest to elevate the guitar to a prominant position in the music world, began at the early age of four. His uncle used to sing songs to him and pretend to strum an imaginary guitar in his lap. Luckily for us, there was a luthier nearby and Segovia took an instant liking to the guitar. Although discouraged by his family (according to them he should play a "real" instrument), he continued to pursure his studies of the guitar. He set a goal for the guitar and himself early in life. It was, to bring Guitar studies to every university in the world, have the guitar played throughout the world, on every major stage, just as the piano and violin were, and lastly, to pass on his love of the guitar to generations to follow. He considerd himself to be the messenger that would complete this impossible quest. He succeeded in all respects.

In 1928 Segovia made his American debut in New York City. Before long, composers like Heitor Villa-Lobos even began to compose original pieces specifically for the guitar. Segovia himself began transposing the classical canon for the guitar as well, most notably his notoriously difficult translation of Bach's Chaconne, as well as many transcriptions of lute and harpsichord music. In addition to recording and performing, Segovia spent the remainder of his life and career successfully influencing the authorities at conservatories, academies, and universities to include the guitar in their instruction programs with the same emphasis given the violin, cello and piano; his early struggles were recounted in his 1983 memoir Andres Segovia: An Autobiography of the Years 1893-1920. He died in 1987.

Tainaka Sachi Information
Tainaka Sachi promoting disillusion (2006)Even when Tainaka was small, she had great potential for singing. When she was still in primary school, she took part in a nationwide children's singing contest with her class, and in 1997 won first prize. She entered this contest again in 1999, however in that year she was part of a group with her two sisters. At 15, Tainaka decided she would become a singer after being inspired by DREAMS COME DRUE and MISIA's songs. At this time she started writing and composing songs, as well as performing live.
Tainaka would continue to enter competitions, such as in 2002 she took part in the televised ASAYAN idol show, and reached 6th place.

Three months later, Tainaka released a third single, Saikou no Kataomoi, which was used as the anime Saiunkoku Monogatari's ending theme song. However, this single would not fare so well as its predecessors and only debuted at #50 on Oricon charts. Tainaka's fourth single was released in February 2007, featuring another original love ballad and a song of hers called Kimi to no Asu which was used as the ending theme song of the last episode of Fate/stay night broadcast back in June 2006. To follow this, Tainaka's debut album Dear... was released in March. Interestingly, this only featured a medley of her two first anime singles instead of the tracks as whole songs.

In February 2007 it was announced that Tainaka would sing the ending theme song to the anime Seirei no Moribito to air in April; a self-composed song called Itoshii Hito e (with famed rock band L'Arc~en~Ciel singing the opening song). According to Tainaka, the song is about love and is overflowing with a dramatic melody.

According to Tainaka's official site, she had written and composed over 60 songs in total at the time of her debut. In early 2004, Tainaka released six songs in a Columbia Records-released concept album called Aru Ai no Uta under the name Sachi (彩智). The album was inspired by Shindou Fuyuki's Okinawa-based romance novel of the same name (which was also released in early 2004). In 2005, Tainaka became part of a  four-member unit called Les Bijoux (レ?ビジュ), who performed at Universal Studios Japan.

Tainaka then debuted in February 2006 with the single disillusion, which was used as the opening theme song to the anime Fate/stay night. This single was quite a high debut, reaching #13 on Oricon charts. Kirameku Namida wa Hoshi ni would then follow as Tainaka's second single (and the second opening theme to the same anime). This single would in fact debut at #9; Tainaka's first top 10 entry.

Reggae Music World Coloring

Reggae is no longer popular in Indonesia, although some two decades ago this genre was epidemic in the country. What exactly is reggae? Perhaps no one knows the answer except that this music comes from Jamaica and brought explore the world by Bob Marley. It is not certain how the origins of this music because experts still can not seem to take a deal about the origins of this music.

Some say that reggae started when The Maytals released a song called Do the Reggay in 1968 while others say that the word is derived from katast reggae, in the language of Jamaica, which means people who dress badly. Bob Marley himself say that reggae originated the term in Spanish which means 'music for the king'.

I do not know which is true, but certainly, reggae has several characteristics that distinguish it from other genres. Reggae formed along with the development skadan rocksteady music in the late 1960s. In general, reggae has a slower tempo and faster dariska of rocksteady. Accent is given on the second and fourth beats in each bar with his rhythm guitar that put pressure on the third beat, or even 'hold' chord on the second beat to beat fourth entry. In essence, the third beat, tempo, and complex bass pattern was that distinguishes reggae from rocksteady.

Musical instruments used in reggae music was actually not much different from genrelain, there are bass, drums, guitar, and piano / keyboard. Even if there is a difference perhaps is the horn section which contains a saxophonist, trumpet or trombone. Guitar chord is usually played with a short pattern that sounds like a snare drum percussion while in-tune usually higher than usual. Vocals could be the part that was not too dominant determining characteristic of reggae since almost all types of songs can be sung with a style of reggae. But generally, reggae singer always uses Jamaican accent when they brought the songs.

Reggae tempo usually played in 4 / 4 or swing because the symmetrical pattern of this genre is difficult to play in another tempo such as 3 / 4, for example. In terms of harmony, musik reggae practically very simple. Sometimes, in one song there is only one or duachord only and recurring pattern is what sometimes makes reggae music so have a hypnotic effect as the pattern used in Javanese gamelan.

Referring to the old traditions, reggae music typically talk about social criticism, although the subsequent development of many reggae musicians who include mild themes like love and other things that are around us. Then, when exactly the first time reggae song appear?

According to historical records, reggae music was first recorded a song called Nanny Goat is owned by Larry Marshall and No More Heartaches have the Beltones. Both appeared in early 1968. Jazz Guitar Legend Jimmy Wyble - RIP

I had been offline for the past few days due to a brutal virus attack on my computer which left me clueless about what was happening in the rest of the world. Having finally restored my system I was saddened to learn from Jazz Guitarist Brandon Bernstein that Jazz Guitar Legend Jimmy Wyble had passed away on Saturday the 16th of January. I of course had heard of Jimmy over the years as being an outstanding player in both Jazz and Western Swing, I was aware that he had played in the Red Norvo Trio and that he was a member of the  Texas Playboys. And even knew about his two line improvisation method but sadly, I had never actually heard him play until recently.
Thanks to a few choice Youtube videos, I understood why he was loved by many both as a marvelous player and more importantly, as a person. I don’t know much more about Jimmy than what can be found on the Web but I’m grateful that there are some lasting memories to be shared on a couple of websites and Youtube.
For more information on Jimmy check out the Classic Jazz Guitar site as well as Jimmy’s own website (wait for the audio file to load) where you can read a really fine interview on Jimmy.
Jazz Guitar Life extends its sympathies and condolences to Jimmy’s family and friends. He will be missed.
